The European Team Chess Championship was held on October 21-31, 2009, in Novi Sad, Serbia. 28 women teams and 38 men teams participated in the event.
The team of Azerbaijan won the Gold medal in the open section, finishing with 15 points from nine rounds. Silver is Russia with 14 points, who was equal first before the last day, but then met a fierce resistance from Spain, with a match finishing in 2-2 tie. Ukraine takes the bronze ahead of the Olympic champion Armenia, thanks to the better tiebreak score.
In the women section we saw a nervous race between Russia and Georgia, with other teams being let behind. Russia manages to score better on tiebreaks and retain the gold medal earned two years ago on Crete. Olympiad champions from Georgia took a silver. Ukraine and the most pleasant surprise of the women event, Azerbaijan, shared the third place with 12 points each, but Ukraine clinches another bronze medal only after summing up the second additional criteria.
